Created in 1960 and funded mainly by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, the Liege Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is the only professional symphony orchestra in French-speaking Belgium (125 permanent members, including 97 musicians).
With its musical director Gergely Madaras, it enjoys undisputed national and international renown and occupies a prime position among European orchestras.
Since 2000, it has been managing one of Europe's finest listed concert halls: the Salle Philharmonique de Liège, inaugurated in 1887 and with a capacity of 1,129. With more than 160 performances a year, ¾ of which are given in the Salle Philharmonique, the OPRL reaches nearly 90,000 spectators in Liège and abroad, and has enjoyed a very positive attendance trend in recent years.
