About the OPRL
Created in 1960 and funded mainly by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, the Liège Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is the only professional symphony orchestra in French-speaking Belgium.
Since 2000, it has been managing one of Europe's finest listed concert halls: the Salle Philharmonique de Liège, inaugurated in 1887 and with a capacity of 1,129, created for the Royal Conservatory of Music of Liège, which still shares the same building today. With more than 170 performances a year, ¾ of which are given in the Salle Philharmonique, the OPRL reaches more than 90,000 spectators in Liège and abroad, and has enjoyed a very positive attendance trend in recent years.
As well as a strong commitment to supporting new talent, promoting Franco-Belgian heritage, and exploring new repertoires, the OPRL boasts an impressive catalogue of more than 130 recordings. Its concerts are regularly broadcast on Mezzo and Medici.tv. Its Music Director is the Hungarian conductor Gergely Madaras since 2019. Lionel Bringuier is the Music Director Designate and will officially start on September 2025.
The Orchestra represents 125 permanent members, including 97 musicians from 19 nationalities with 56% males and 44% female musicians. A lot of news musicians have joined the orchestra recently. One quarter of our players are under 35. HOP Asbl is a dynamic collective of musicians from the orchestra who organize chamber music concerts and educational activities.
