PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION

The new "Saturday Rendez-vous" series kicks off with the Orchestre National de Metz Grand Est, performing a varied programme.  Mendelssohn's overture evokes the majesty of the Scottish islands, between grandeur and romantic torment. The spirited, expressive Piano Concerto by Florence Price (1932), the first African-American composer to make her mark on the stage, blends classical forms with negro spiritual melodies. Finally, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition (1874) is inspired by the works of the painter Viktor Hartmann and displays extraordinarily-expressive frescoes of sound.
