TCHAIKOVSKY, WINTER DREAMS
For its Christmas concert, the OPRL, under the direction of Austrian conductor Christoph Campestrini, explores some major works by composers inspired by the melancholicy beauty of winter. In the excerpt from Glazunov’s ballet The Seasons, we hear a delicate evocation of winter, with its frost, ice, hail and, of course, snow! Rimsky-Korsakov's music is taken from Christmas Eve, an opera about the lives of Ukrainian villagers, which is full of Slavic colours and irresistibly-picturesque folk dances. Finally, Tchaikovsky's First Symphony captures the beauty and intense emotion of a dreamlike journey into the heart of winter and its misty landscapes.
