SHOSTAKOVICH 8

Composed in 1943, Shostakovich's Eighth is the most tragic of his three “war” symphonies. With its alternation between irony, despair and violent outbursts, it maintains the tension right up until the very last moment, when the unexpected conclusion gives way to hope and renewal. Violinist Lorenzo Gatto has charted a remarkable course since his victory as 2nd  Prize winner at the 2009 Queen Elisabeth Competition. On his return to Liège, he will be performing Prokofiev's deeply moving First Concerto (1923), a work of gripping intensity, in which profound lyricism and satirical passages follow one another with brio.
