MOZART, SYMPHONY No. 39
Thanks to Mozart, the French horn ascended through the ranks at a time when it was regarded only as an instrument for hunting and the great outdoors. The Second Concerto (1783) is both noble and joyful, enriched by a slow movement imbued with great tenderness. It is a great opportunity for the OPRL to present its new principal horn player, Margaux Ortman. A mature work, Mozart's Symphony No. 39 (1788) is inspired by the theatrical, and can be compared to Don Giovanni for its relentless search for new orchestral colours, the presence of deep, meditative passages, and its gorgeous, lyrical melodies. Sublime!
