Opening concert: Don Juan
For their season opener, Gergely Madaras and the OPRL set off to meet literature's greatest seducer, Don Juan, whose many conquests are brilliantly captured by Richard Strauss. Strauss also set to music the exuberance of the mischievous hero of German folklore, the irresistibly playful prankster Till Eulenspiegel. Discovered by Simon Rattle at the age of 16 when she performed Beethoven's Violin Concerto, Veronika Eberle makes her Liège debut in the same concerto, one of the most popular works in the repertoire. Having unfortunately been injured this week, German violinist Veronika Eberle is unable to perform Beethoven's Violin Concerto. She is replaced in the same concerto by the Hungarian violinist Júlia Pusker, winner of the 2019 Queen Elisabeth Competition (during which she also performed the Beethoven Concerto in the final).
