Beethoven, Missa solemnis

Description

Beethoven's Missa solemnis (1818-1823), a mature work that explores new horizons, as did the Ninth Symphony and the last string quartets, is a pinnacle of sacred music. Commissioned by Archduke Rudolph (brother of the Emperor of Austria) for his enthronement as Archbishop, Beethoven failed to deliver the work on time. He was so engrossed in the task that he missed his deadlines to create a colossal score that transcended the simple framework of liturgical music. With its choral flourishes, orchestral swells and lyrical elegance, Beethoven imagined a new hymn to brotherhood, monumental... and sublime!
