Norway / Finland: Mysteries of the animist Arctic

Here we are on the shores of the Arctic Ocean, in the Norwegian county of Finnmark, with sound poet Torgeir Vassvik and his animistic 'Joik', the vocal art of the indigenous Sámi people. With a magical energy and a certain shamanic experience, he transports the audience with his voice, a raw and fascinating jewel, like a mirror of the landscape: "with joik, you don't sing about a subject, you are the subject". Drawing on his diverse sound experiences, collaborating with the eclectic guitarist Juhani Silvola, he adapts the animist vocal tradition and percussion rituals to today's world, and incorporates styles from other circumpolar minorities (such as Siberian throat singing).
